lyrics

Tim Finnegan lived in Walkin Street
A gentleman Irish, but mighty odd
He had a brogue both rich and sweet
And to rise in the world he carried a hod
You see Tim had a sort of a tipplin' way
With a love of the liquor he was born
To send him on his way each day
A drop of the craythur every morn'

Whack fol the da now dance to your partner
'Round the floor your trotters shake
Wasn't it the truth I told ya
Lots of fun at Finnegan's wake

One morning Tim felt rather full
His head felt heavy and it made him shake
He fell from the ladder and broke his skull
And they carried him home, his corpse to wake
They wrapped him up in a nice clean sheet
They laid him out upon the bed
Wit' a bottle of whiskey at his feet
And a barrel of porter at his head

Whack fol the da now dance to your partner
'Round the floor your trotters shake
Wasn't it the truth I told ya
Lots of fun at Finnegan's wake

His friends assembled at the wake
Mrs. Finnegan, she called for lunch
First brought tea, then cake
Then pipe tobacco and whiskey punch
Then Biddy O'Brien began to cry
"Such a nice clean corpse did you ever see
Tim avourneen, why'd you die?"
"Shut your gob!" Said Paddy McGee

Whack fol the da now dance to your partner
'Round the floor your trotters shake
Wasn't it the truth I told ya
Lots of fun at Finnegan's wake

Maggie O'Connor took up the job
"Biddy," says she, "you're wrong I'm sure"
Biddy up and belt her in the gob
And left her sprawling on the floor
And civil war did then engage
'Twas woman to woman and man to man
Shillelagh law was all the rage
A row and a ruction soon began

Whack fol the da now dance to your partner
'Round the floor your trotters shake
Wasn't it the truth I told ya
Lots of fun at Finnegan's wake

Mickey O'Donnell ducked his head
When a bottle of whiskey flew at him
It missed and falling on the bed
The liquor scattered over Tim
Bedad he rivives, see how he rises
Timothy rising from the dead
Saying "Whirl your whisky 'round like blazes
Thundering Jaysus, you think I'm dead?!"

Whack fol the da now dance to your partner
'Round the floor your trotters shake
Wasn't it the truth I told ya
Lots of fun at Finnegan's wake
